A Reflection of BHM with ME

Let’s take a look at how Moving Everest recognized Black History Month this year! Our main goal was to provide our scholars with the opportunity to understand Black Historical relevance and achievement. Throughout the month, Moving Everest worked on exhibits for our interactive Black History Museum, hosted a BHM staff potluck and participated in BHM Spirit Week.

The whole school had the opportunity to participate in our interactive BHM Museum. Classrooms K-4 selected an impactful historical or current figure to create their exhibit around, while students in grades 5-8 created their own exhibits. The main goal of this event was to bring history and current events together for an immersive learning experience for our scholars.

This year, we wanted to show appreciation for our hardworking faculty, too. So we held a BHM staff potluck. It was a great way to relax a bit and reinforce the sense of community we have built at ME.

Wrapping up the month was our very own BHM Spirit Week. Monday was for expressing culture, so scholars and staff were able to dress in African garb, historically African hairstyles and or bedazzled hair. Tuesday was all about unity, so everyone dressed in black. On Wednesday, we celebrated our differences through wearing clothes with positive messages. College merch from an HBCU—or any college that highlights African American academics—wrapped up spirit week on Thursday. While spirit week was a fun chance for everyone to express themselves, the themes fit in well with the overall spirit and message of BHM.

It’s essential for everyone at ME (and the world, frankly) to understand the vital impact that African American influence has had on our culture. The United States would not be the same without the perseverance and selflessness of its ancestors. This month is a chance for people to reflect on how far the community has come, while keeping the flame of progression alive. Ultimately, we’re allowed to reap the fruits of our ancestors' labor, while also asking for a better tomorrow.
